What is macro fiber?
Macro fiber, also called macro synthetic fiber, is a structural polymer reinforcement (typically polypropylene) added directly to the concrete mix. Unlike a single steel bar or mesh, macro fiber distributes thousands of individual fibres throughout the entire concrete volume. When the concrete cracks, the fibres bridge the crack and carry load across it, providing post-crack residual strength and toughness. Macro synthetic fiber is defined by EN 14889-2 as a fibre able to provide structural performance in concrete, which distinguishes it from thinner micro fibres used mainly for early-age shrinkage control.
How does macro fiber reinforcement work?
Macro fiber works by bridging cracks and transferring stress after the concrete has cracked. The key mechanisms are:
- Crack bridging: fibres span micro-cracks and limit their width, controlling propagation.
- Residual (post-crack) strength: the slab keeps carrying load after cracking, unlike plain concrete.
- Toughness and impact resistance: energy absorption increases, improving fatigue and impact performance.
- Uniform reinforcement: because fibres are dispersed through the whole section, there are no unreinforced zones as can occur with misplaced mesh.

In many of these applications macro fiber allows engineers to reduce or eliminate conventional steel mesh, speeding up placement and removing corrosion risk.
